Towards a sustainable aviation

News

Sustainability is a key word in our society today. We can hear it all around, but not always with a good understanding of what it actually means. Although the concept is evolving, classically in order to declare any activity as sustainable, we need to analyse 3 different aspects: social, economic and environmental. Usually, the subjects and lectures delivered at ITAérea are focusing on the three aspects.

As we saw before, the social and economical aspects are fundamental to assess the global sustainability of commercial aviation, covering economic structures or working conditions in airports and A/C constructors, social effects of commercial flights and many other things, but are not within our scope here although we need to be aware of that. The reason for this approach is that the environmental impact of aviation has become a main issue not only for the industry but also across society with a very negative view not always backed by the facts.

For the sake of comparison, in December 2020 the EU made a commitment to cut emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030, far mor ambitious, and carbon-neutrality by 2050.

All in all, these goals were a realistic compromise by the industry back in 2008 that should be given credit due to its particularities when almost no other industry, as a whole, had such an action plan.

There is an increasing number of airlines committing to 0 emissions in 2050 (United, IAG, Etihad…) This last one with a milestone of 50% reduction in 2035, very impressing. Offsetting but also by means of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and even Carbon sequestration.

The aviation is not idle at all in terms of environmental sustainability: there are many efforts along diverse lines to live up to the goals set in 2008. Probably more will be needed, but this is certainly a robust first step.

ITAérea and the UN offer the only postgraduate degree in sustainable management of air transport in English

ITAérea Aeronautical Business School supports and encourages policies and measures to fight climate crisis and environmental conservation. Our commitment to the cause and the first step in this direction was signed by agreement at the UN headquarters in Geneva, in 2017. At the time the first stone was laid of what today is the only master in sustainable air transport management in the world. Taught in English, the Master in Sustainable Air Transport Management offers our students the essential tools for a sustainable and efficient management of all companies covered by air transport: from airports to airlines, through auxiliary service companies, service providers of air navigation, aircraft manufacturers, etc.
