Cape Verde, whose official name is the Republic of Cape Verde (in Portuguese, República de Cabo Verde), is a sovereign island state of Africa, located in the Atlantic Ocean, more specifically in the Macaronesian volcanic archipelago of Cape Verde, off the Senegalese coast, consisting of ten volcanic islands with a combined land area of approximately 4,033 square kilometers (1,557 sq mi.). These islands lie between 600 to 850 kilometers (320 to 460 nautical miles) west of Cap-Vert, situated at the westernmost point of mainland Africa.
The Cape Verde Islands are part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Islands. Its form of government is the semi-presidential republic.
