European Airports Sign NetZero2050 Agreement

News

During the 29th Annual Congress and General Assembly of ACI Europe, recently held in Cyprus, European airport operators have formally committed to achieve the goal of zero carbon emissions in 2050 and work to accelerate the decarbonisation of the air sector.

With this commitment, airports in Europe, including those in the Aena network, are responding to the climate emergency, and are acting on the most recent scientific evidence presented by the IPCC Special Report on Global Warming.

ACI Europe Annual Conference was attended by Maurici Lucena, President and CEO of Aena, who underlined: “In the coming years, we face the key challenge that our carbon emissions are zero, to make our activity compatible with the preservation of the environment. The protection of the planet is a firm commitment of Aena, as demonstrated by our strategy to fight against Climate Change”. In addition, Aena has increased its presence in this important common forum with the appointment of Javier Marín, Managing Director of Airports, as a member of the Executive Committee of the European airport council.

This commitment is presented along with a call for the entire aviation sector to develop a joint ambition and an initial roadmap towards an air transport system with zero net carbon emissions. This is necessary to complement the important efforts already being made by the aviation sector under the ICAO package of measures, including CORSIA.

So far, the promise is supported by 194 airports operated by 40 airport operators in 24 European countries, and each one of them commits individually with the same objective. This marks a change in the climate action of the airport industry. According to the current traffic volume of airports in Europe (2,340 million passengers received in 2018) and the estimated carbon footprint, This net commitment of zero emissions will eliminate a total of 3.46 million tons of annual CO2 emissions from 2050.

These and many other sustainable management measures adopted by airlines, airports, etc. are in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (SDG). Among other issues, these objectives, set out in the UN 2030 Agenda, define the lines of work to achieve an optimization of the sustainable management of air transport. In this regard, the trilateral alliance between ITAérea, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and CIFAL Mérida aims to develop comprehensive training in air transport that meets the 17 objectives of Sustainable development. These objectives are materialized in this postgraduate course providing their students with a global and sustainable vision that allows them to manage and direct air transport companies in an efficient manner in compliance with current regulations.

The Master in Sustainable Air Transport Management, taught jointly with UNITAR in English in executive modality, has a faculty of 32 teachers, all of them top-level professionals with extensive experience in the air transport sector. We must emphasize especially the international character of this postgraduate, which is reflected in the internationality of its teaching staff. These professors represent more than 10 nationalities (Europe, USA, Latin America, Middle East, etc.) and occupy senior management positions in leading companies and institutions.

The Master in Sustainable Air Transport Management is composed of 5 modules plus a Master’s Final Project. Each of the 5 modules is identified with a business sector included in air transport: airports, airlines, air law, air navigation and the aeronautical industry. Each module deals with topics of vital importance in aeronautical and airport management such as the airport business, airport infrastructure, sustainable construction, airport efficiency, the structure and organization of airlines, airline operations and their sustainability , handling, air cargo, etc.

The diploma of the Master in Sustainable Air Transport Management is issued by both institutions, ITAérea and UNITAR. Furthermore, the ceremony of graduation will take place in the Palace of Nations, home of the United Nations Office at Geneva, Switzerland.

Although the start of the master’s degree is scheduled for October 2019 (limited places), the pre-enrollment period is already open. You can request more information at:
