Aena, the first Spanish company to incorporate its commitment against climate change into its bylaws

News

The president and CEO of Aena, Maurici Lucena, highlighted the principles of its Climate Action Plan at the last General Shareholders’ Meeting of the group, which, after the approved modification of its bylaws, will permanently become a Independent item on the agenda of the annual meetings.

In this way, Aena becomes the first Spanish company and one of the first in the world to be accountable to its shareholders each year on its climate plan.

“It is a clear sign of commitment to comply with the Plan and to be transparent about it. I would like to emphasize that we are the first Spanish company that is going to incorporate its environmental obligations into its bylaws ”, Maurici Lucena highlighted.

The president has assured that the fight against climate change is the main line of action that will generate value for society and for our company and that there will be no trade-off (on average) between environmental protection and profitability.

With this initiative, the company takes a further step in its environmental commitment, strengthening its leadership in achieving more sustainable air transport.

Strategy against climate change: more ambitious goals

The main objective of Aena’s strategy to combat climate change is to achieve a progressive reduction in CO2 emissions derived from the company’s own activity.

Increase from 70% to 100% the percentage of self-sufficiency from the renewable energy facilities of the Aena Photovoltaic Plan by 2026.

Bring Aena’s carbon neutrality program forward to 2026, as well as having the Airport Carbon Accreditation accreditation from ACI EU level 3+ neutrality at the main airports.

Advance ACI EU’s Net Zero commitment to 2040, to be 0 net emissions at all airports in the network.

The final objective is to walk on the path of a sustainable recovery, to achieve the commitments acquired in terms of decarbonization and protection of the environment, working collaboratively with our stakeholders, airlines, air traffic service providers, fuel producers, handling companies, aircraft manufacturers, etc.

ITAérea and the UN offer the only postgraduate degree in sustainable management of air transport in English

ITAérea Aeronautical Business School supports and encourages policies and measures to fight climate crisis and environmental conservation. Our commitment to the cause and the first step in this direction was signed by agreement at the UN headquarters in Geneva, in 2017. At the time the first stone was laid of what today is the only master in sustainable air transport management in the world. Taught in English, the Master in Sustainable Air Transport Management offers our students the essential tools for a sustainable and efficient management of all companies covered by air transport: from airports to airlines, through auxiliary service companies, service providers of air navigation, aircraft manufacturers, etc.
