The digital transformation and the ecological transition will lead investments in the aeronautical sector in the future

News

There has been much talk in recent months about reconstruction plans, ecological transition, digitization, teleworking and, ultimately, all the elements that should shape a future in the different industrial sectors of our country.

The aeronautical and aerospace sector plays a strategic role in the technological and energy transformation of our industry. First of all, it is a vector for generating quality employment. In addition, it has the added advantage of having the entire productive value chain included within our borders: from technological development to fundamental R & D & I, through manufacturing, something that does not happen in the countries of our country. environment.

Future investment projects in the aerospace sector will be aimed at accelerating the digital transformation and the ecological transition. To carry out this digital transformation, it is necessary to start up smart factories using technologies such as AI, Robotics, IoT or 5G, and the development of new, more efficient materials.

Regarding the ecological transition, it is necessary to highlight the increase in the energy efficiency of the aircraft, with measures such as aerodynamic optimization with the aim of reducing consumption, the promotion of the Clean Sky program and others aligned with the ACARE objectives.

Based on the PwC Industry 4.0 study, drawn up based on 2,000 interviews with managers from industries around the world, of which 45 are Spanish, 8% of national companies are at a high level of digitization.

The aeronautical industry is one of the spearheads of the Spanish industrial digital transformation. In it, no less than 6% of all investment in technology in Spain is applied, according to figures from the guide drawn up by the Spanish Association of Defense, Aeronautics and Space Technology Companies (TEDAE) and entitled Challenges of the Aeronautical Sector in Spain.

Aeronautical companies involved in the digital transformation

These companies work on a global scale and have dizzying numbers of profits and business volume, they have headquarters all over the world, some of them in Spain. We are talking about references in the aeronautical sector and, even, space.

These include various initiatives that drive your digital transformation integrated into digitization plans. These actions encompass aspects such as 3D design, manufacturing procedures, data intelligence, simulation and everything related to engineering.

We can give as an example the development of a 3D platform that facilitates the continuity of the productive flow that begins in the design and ends in the operations themselves through a single data system. And it is that the data is considered by those responsible as the key to digital advancement.

We can also mention Artificial Intelligence tools aimed at analyzing the relationships they maintain with airlines so that they enjoy a better experience. For this, historical data of purchases or customer service, among other sources, are processed.

Other notable measures are the creation of digital content distribution systems to improve the internal and external communication strategy, the transmission of test results in real time to engineers through a web application and the development of digital twins.

Europe’s Plan

The challenge of the European Commission before the 2020 goals are:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the EU by 20%.
  • That 20% of the energy consumed comes from renewables.
  • Reduce, through energy efficiency improvements, energy consumption by another 20%.
  • Achieve (already in 2015) a good state of the EU waters (fresh, transitional – estuaries and deltas- and maritime up to one nautical mile from the coast).
  • Improve air quality.
  • Minimize the adverse effects on man of the chemicals used.
  • Prevent, prepare for use, recycle and eliminate waste.

ITAérea and the UN offer the only postgraduate degree in sustainable management of air transport in English

ITAérea Aeronautical Business School supports and encourages policies and measures to fight climate crisis and environmental conservation. Our commitment to the cause and the first step in this direction was signed by agreement at the UN headquarters in Geneva, in 2017. At the time the first stone was laid of what today is the only master in sustainable air transport management in the world. Taught in English, the Master in Sustainable Air Transport Management offers our students the essential tools for a sustainable and efficient management of all companies covered by air transport: from airports to airlines, through auxiliary service companies, service providers of air navigation, aircraft manufacturers, etc.
